Pauline Setella

Pauline is a Hopi potter, born in 1930, mother of 10 (some who are potters) raised at Mishongnovi on Second Mesa on Hopi. Married Justin Setalla, and living in his traditional adobe Hopi ranch home,  Pauline learned traditional Hopi pottery techniques from her mother and sister-in-laws, Agnes and Eunice Navasie of the Feather/Frog woman families.

Pauline's work is easily recognizable being fired in colors from yellow to orange, unless she's making white ware. All of Setalla's pottery was formed in the traditional coil technique from native clay and slipped with vegetable paints using a yucca bush and painted in the traditional manner.  Firing was with sheep dung, a popular way at Hopi.

Corn, clouds, rain, parrot and other bird designs are the basis of Hopi unique designs and styles, Pauline is known for her poly-chrome wedding vases, traditional style piki bowls, and water canteens.
